What We Don't Get About Climate Change

Fellow architects, can we talk? This is gonna hurt, but it needs saying. Were I a poet, I’d write, The end is nigh, and we are why. I’m no bard, though, so I’ll put it this way: Most of us suspect anthropogenic climate change will lead to civilization’s end. Some architects deny the science (“The climate is always changing!”), while others ignore the obvious (denial is a good coping mechanism), but buried within the folds of all angst-addled designer brains lies the fear that today’s toddlers could be the last of us.

I’ll pause here to let the weight of that thought depress you.

The VOV Apartment Is for a Family Who Loves Fashion, Music, and Art

Design-Milk - Thu, 09/05/2019 - 19:00

A young couple with a child enlisted the help of ater.architects to design their new home in Kiev, Ukraine. The VOV apartment spans two floors with the public spaces being on the lower level and the private areas on the top, making a suitable separation between ‘day’ and ‘night’ zones. The couple, who are fond of fashion, music, and art, now reside in a 100-square-meter apartment that plays off their modern interests.

The interior design is a combination of neutral hues covering the larger surfaces, like the floors, walls, and ceiling, and bold colors used for the accents. The main living space features wood floors, concrete ceilings and panels, and a black and pink kitchen, which are paired with cobalt blue, purple, and pink details to liven the space up.

The couple’s massive vinyl collection received a custom black shelf flanked with wood on the sides.

The dining area extends off the kitchen island, which accommodates several bar stools, offering large surfaces to prep food and entertain.

A white electric piano joins a vibrant purple chair from Moustache and a piece of art by Françoise Oz.

The playful first floor bathroom boasts a warm pink color on the concrete block wall and floor, along with a resin monkey lamp from Seletti.

A purple shelf utilizes space under the hot-rolled metal stairs that pivot their way to the second floor.

The bedrooms were kept small as the family activities take place downstairs.

The master bathroom is set off by a green and pink metal cabinet and concrete panels with a gradient pink. To top it off, they installed a neon lightening bolt that adds violet mood lighting to the bathroom.

A few talks that piqued our interest includes: “Modern World: Life without Frank Lloyd Wright,” “Design with Health & Wellness in Mind,” and “Digital Design Disruption: It’s Not Coming, It’s Here.” Seats are first come, first served and are included in your tickets so be sure to check out the full program here so you can plan to come early!

If you’re a foodie, you’ll want to also stop by the Official Culinary Pavilion for daily demonstrations and yummy tastings. The 2019 line-up has yet to be announced but if it’s anything like last year, you’ll definitely want to put this on your itinerary – your stomach will thank you later.

The Shadow Collection Tableware Is Playful yet Elegant

Design-Milk - Thu, 09/05/2019 - 15:00

Karim Rashid has taken KreatebyKarim to a new level by introducing new tableware that’s soft, vivid, and elegant. Our favorite is the Shadow Collection, inspired by the playfulness of shadows themselves. Made of dishwasher-safe Bone China, the irregular edges of the plates recall overlapping shadows seen under varying angles of light. Each of the plates features a unique shape and pattern, creating a collection that feels both layered and complete.

The Cedars Minimalist Home in Orient, New York

Design-Milk - Thu, 09/05/2019 - 14:00

The Cedars is a minimalist home located in Orient, New York, designed by Michael Yarinsky. The residence was originally built in the late 19th century situated in a quiet town along the bay. The clients, a young couple, wanted a space that would not only pay homage to the history of the building, but also represent their personalities as well.

Yarinsky referenced the surrounding ocean by using accented muted blues and greens, which contrasted the white-washed floors. The wallpapers reflect the transient every-changing scenery and the ethereal mood and movement of water.

Most of the interior maintains an open floor plan with the intention to promote communal meals and intimate conversations. The project was very much a collaboration with other talented artists. Yarinsky decidedly included works from local craftsman within the North Fork community, as well as taking pieces from familiar names such as Ladies & Gentlemen, Viriginia Sin, Light + Ladder, Calico Wallpaper, and Caroline Z Hurley.
